E30 - Chelsweets - How my baking blog allowed me to quit my job and buy my apartment!

This former accountant who baked to simply relieve a bit of stress of the madness of her corporate life, finds herself one day doing Facebook lives for the Food Network.  How does that happen?

Innocent bakes that she brought in for her coworkers were secretly building the next career she didn’t know she would end up quitting her day job for.  She creates content, but it’s not about the social media so much as it is more about her blog.  Yes blog, remember those??

Her recipes, and the millions of people who search online and find her website are what has really propelled her second career.  Chelsey is very open and honest about her journey.  She’s learned a lot but also shared a lot of how she did it, how well it paid her, and where it took her.  This is a story about opportunity in so many places!  Hope you like it.

E29 - British Girl Bakes - From cupcakes to clicks. How Emily went from running a cupcake cafe to building a huge YouTube and online presence.

Emily Friend is an adventurer.  She may have received a degree in law, but that wasn't enough to satisfy her.  Having lived in various places around the world, she decided to move to Costa Rica.

It wasn't long after arriving that she realised she had a  simple craving for the desserts she loved didn’t exist, so she had to go make it herself.  The innocence of doing something like this turns her down a path of baking, running a cupcake shop in Costa Rica, selling this business, and eventually settling in LA.

All it takes is something like a child to come along and decide you need to find a new path.   With no cafe of her own to run any more she had to figure out a new plan.  An old video on her phone she uploaded to YouTube years prior ended up giving her an idea - go online and teach!   The rest may be history but there’s a lot more to this story than just creating content.  Listen on to get Emily’s full story.

E25 - Oh Cakes Winnie - The reality of giving up a career and losing your purpose. Then finding baking to build yourself back up into something inspirational!

This week we’re in Luxembourg to speak with Winnie.  Fashion designer-turned baker and content creator with some pretty amazing bakes.  For example her cake rolls which are extremely unique.

This creative type fell into baking but it was never really part of the plan.  Giving up a career and figuring out what to do in life was a struggle.  However, baking has gone from being just something fun to keep the brain busy to now baking all sorts of creative content.

For someone with almost 700 thousand followers, she only just created a website!  But that doesn’t phase Winnie.  She just goes with the flow and gives herself the space to be creative and let herself flourish.  She’s been in some from of design and creativity for most of her life so this is now the natural continuation of what she loves as a person.

She’s been in the fortunate position to have a husband continue to work to reduce the pressure on her to have to perform with her baking from the get go.   This has allowed her to develop her skills over time and see where it all takes her.  But as many of you know, the baking machine sucks you in bit by bit and you find yourself eventually turning this hobby into something full time.

How did Winnie handle that transition?  Listen on to hear her journey.

E22 - Sugarpusher - She went from MTV to baking. How one career change set the stage to change her destiny towards baking.

Huntsville, Alabama.  I doubt many of you have been there.  I think I’ve driven through it at some point in my life.  But that’s where we are today speaking with Ally, or “Sugar Pusher” as she’s known online.

Ally is a content creator.  But she’s been baking for a long time.  Her previous career while still creative was just hard work.  She’s spent a long time in the music industry.  We actually spend a good bit of time talking to her about this part of her life because it’s important to understand the past made her into who she is today.

It’s a HARD industry to be in.  But wow can it shape and motivate you to succeed.  Ally has an incredible knack for creativity but also is extremely kind to share so much about how she’s made it successful for her to people who are new to this industry.

Her content is witty, inspiring, funny, detailed, and quite varied!  We wanted to go in depth with a full-time content creator because this is one aspect of the baking industry that isn’t well-understood and many people want to be a part of it.  And luckily we found Ally along the way to tell us about her baking journey too.  Everybody wins!  I really hope you get a lot out of this episode….

E20 - Tigga Mac - Everything you wanted to learn about getting millions of followers as a baker but were afraid to ask.

Melbourne, Australia.  When I lived there I didn’t know it for its cakes, I knew it for its coffee.  But things have changed a lot!  One of the largest content creators around lives here and joins us for this episode - I’m referring to Tigga Mac and her bestie Katie.

They’ve gone from slaving away in their tiny kitchen just keeping on top of cake orders to be internationally recognised for their antics on social media.  I learned so much talking to them about mastering social media - and particularly TikTok where they have - are you ready for this? - over 1.6million followers.

This has transformed their baking journey from taking cake orders to content creation and brand deals, but still, making lots of cake.  There are so many interesting themes and ideas that they come with up for content but at the heart of it is still they are self-taught, highly-talented bakers.

Years of grinding away to build up their business has given them the confidence to go create and have so much fun doing it - as a team  Get your notebook out for this one because there are so many useful lessons shared so kindly by these two lovely people.  We’re really excited to share this with episode with you! Enjoy!

-Haf

E18 - Kendra Groves - Keeping your creativity alive when everything around you is so challenging.

Australia, England, Australia, England… Kendra Groves has been bouncing back and forth with her husband between these two distant countries navigating her way through life and baking her way through a lot of it.

She’s in Manchester now in case you’re wondering.  She’s originally trained in musical theatre and opera, but trying and trying to get somewhere in that industry just proved too difficult against many odds.   The abusive agents, the challenge of being tall, not looking the way you need to be.   It was all too much!

Her passion to be creative has always been there but it wasn’t until she started baking that she realised that she can keep that creativity going and make something of it.   Kendra is so vibrant, always in bright colours no matter what time of year it is, and very bubbly!  Just watch her social media and you’ll instantly see what I’m talking about.

That personality is very addictive to watch and she has a great knack for keeping you entertained in any video she creates.  While she’s a content creator by night, she still works as a chef during the day.  So balancing it all can be challenging.   How does she do it?  What inspires her to keep going? And does she even have black or grey in her wardrobe?

Keep listening to find out and hear about Kendra’s inspiring baking journey…
